Il San Pietro di Positano

Positano, Italy

Il San Pietro di Positano

Just under a minute is all it takes to reach the beach via a lift carved into the rock. This deeply Amalfitan establishment opened in 1970 and embodies the art of effortless simplicity. Designed by Carlo Cinque, it remains a family-run property that has managed to preserve its original philosophy: a location that’s set slightly apart from Positano, yet captures its very essence: sunny and imbued with a discreet sense of hedonism. Designed to ensure privacy, the few rooms all have sea views, and are decorated with local pottery and textiles in light, airy colours. The restaurants do full justice to the Neapolitan culinary tradition, whilst refreshing, fragrant gardens spread across ten terraces seem as if they are suspended on the cliff face. And if those walls could talk, they would have plenty of stories about evenings when Tina Turner, Leonard Bernstein and Barbra Streisand shed their legendary personas to sing around the piano, or about Dustin Hoffman strolling through the vegetable garden picking tomatoes. No doubt the kitchens haven’t forgotten that one evening, Colin Farrell managed to get a pineapple pizza, either. Il San Pietro di Positano is one of those places where anything is possible.
