The first time it occurred to me to pursue a career in art restoration was when I was in high school, or more particularly, during a drawing class. One day my very strict teacher came to me, looked at my drawing and said: “You have absolutely no creativity, but you copy well. You could become a good art restorer”. At first, I was very upset, obviously, but then I started thinking about it, and at the end of the day, he was right!
Since their fruitful partnership began in 1989, Valeria Merlini and Daniela Storti have successfully undertaken numerous large-scale conservation and restoration projects. Through these experiences, they have gained recognition for their exceptional technical skills and for their expertise in team management. In 1999, Merlini and Storti restored Caravaggio’s The Pilgrims’ Madonna in situ at the Church of Sant’Agostino, making them the first to carry out an open restoration in Italy. Thereafter, they performed restoration work on Giulio Romano’s Holy Family and Caravaggio’s Adoration of the Pastors in public spaces provided by the House of the Parliament, which enabled curious onlookers to examine restoration projects close-up.
The experience will start with an exclusive visit at the Odescalchi Palace inside Princess Odescalchi’s house where she keeps the “Conversion of Saul” by Caravaggio, restored by the studio in 2006, a painting that is part of her private collection. Then you will have the opportunity to discover a church in which Valéria has restored an art work. The experience will conclude at the Art Restoration where Lartisien’s guests will have the chance to closely observe the restorers' work and to discover little-known aspects of ancient artists' work.
